NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a training session at Mount Bundey on Monday, a 28-year-old Australian Army service member lost his life when a military vehicle overturned. In the same incident, five other soldiers sustained injuries. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the tragic death on Tuesday and stated that the soldier’s family had been notified. The accident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence officials assured that support services were made available for the personnel and families impacted by the event.

Australian Army rollover kills soldier, injures five
Mount Bundey training death prompts Army, police and coronial investigations in Australia.

Northern Territory Police responded to a report of the rollover around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. Emergency teams from CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance were dispatched to the training ground. Medical teams transported two of the injured soldiers by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at approximately 7:30 p.m., while three others were moved later that evening via aircraft. All five injured personnel received hospital treatment following the crash, though authorities have not disclosed further details about their injuries as of Tuesday.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, stated that an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal incident had been initiated. Military police secured the crash site after the event, and a land accident investigation board will review the rollover and related factors. Northern Territory Police are assisting Defence and conducting inquiries for the coroner. At this point, officials have not determined the cause of the vehicle’s overturning, and no responsibility or contributing factors have been publicly disclosed.

    Military and police investigations continue

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to the soldier’s family, friends, and Army colleagues following the confirmation of the death. Defence Minister Richard Marles also offered his sympathies, describing the incident as a significant loss for the Australian Defence Force. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro extended thanks to emergency personnel who helped evacuate the injured soldiers. Defence indicated that it remains committed to supporting those affected while investigators examine the crash and the training activity taking place at Mount Bundey.

The Mount Bundey Training Area is used by the Australian military for exercises and training sessions, including those involving allied forces in the Northern Territory. The site accommodates various activities such as live-fire exercises. Monday’s accident marks yet another tragic event involving Australian Army training in 2026, following the death of Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle during parachute training at Jervis Bay in May. That incident involved a mid-air collision during the exercise, with another paratrooper surviving with minor injuries.

    Previous fatality at Mount Bundey

Mount Bundey was also the scene of a different fatal training accident in 2017, when Private Jason Challis died during a live-fire urban training exercise at the base. A subsequent coronial inquest in the Northern Territory examined the circumstances surrounding his death. The Department of Defence later pleaded guilty to a workplace health and safety offence linked to that incident. The 2017 case remains separate from Monday’s vehicle rollover, which authorities are still investigating under military and coronial protocols.

The Defence Department has not disclosed the name, unit, or service details of the soldier who died in the latest accident. Officials also have not identified the vehicle involved nor the specific training activity being conducted before the rollover occurred. The Australian Defence Force stated that additional information will be provided when appropriate. Northern Territory Police continue to support the coronial investigation, while the Army carries out its own review. No cause for the crash or official conclusions regarding the circumstances of the soldier’s death have been publicly announced.
